Dorthy Day

Dorthy one line Zingers

“My strength returns to me with my cup of coffee and the reading of the psalms. ”

“We must talk about poverty, because people insulated by their own comfort lose sight of it.”

“Life itself is a haphazard, untidy, messy affair.”

“It is people who are important, not the masses.”

“Writing is hard work. But if you want to become a writer you will become one. Nothing will stop you.”

“Don't call me a saint. I don't want to be dismissed so easily. ”

“Charity is only as warm as those who administer it.”

“Don't worry about being effective. Just concentrate on being faithful to the truth.”

“Those who cannot see Christ in the poor are atheists indeed. ”

Dorothy Day was a great example of someone who could balance truth and love. An opponent of birth control, abortion, homosexual activity, women priests and trendy liturgies, yet an advocate for the poor and destitute—pious without being uncritical. She is a model for us all. Unlike most today who are either for truth or for love, she was able to blend compassion and conviction. May she not be hijacked by those who distort and abuse the difficult tension between loving God and neighbor.

Ryan thanx for chiming in. Really appreciate your comment. Though i must say there are those who combine compassion and conviction and may stand on the other side of some of those issues. Deep peace..

I believe most people—maybe all—believe that they hold compassion and conviction in a right balance—as a both/and. I believe everyone feels that they are loving God and others fully. If it was otherwise, then I assume people would change their ways/beliefs. But that being the case, people still hold wildly differing views on various subjects. What disturbs me is not the differing views, per se, but the lack of care to listen to opposing views. Each invariable comes at things from his or her own perspective and presuppositions, but rarely do people take the time to have these challenged by other views, by other times, by other vantage points. Sometimes it seems like we are just picking and choosing from the voices of the past, taking what we like and tossing away what we don’t. We stand in judgment over them; they don’t stand in prophetic witness over us.

There’s much more that I could say, but I’d rather listen to why people choose the opposing side…
Miss you Brad!
